Nikon D3100 Overview

The D3100 is an entry-level model and the Guide Mode, menus and overall ease of use makes it an ideal camera for the novice dSLR user. However it's many features, including full manual control, 14.2 megapixel, high sensitivity CMOS sensor and Full HD movie capability appeals to the more advanced user as well. The design is stylish, with rounded shapes and smooth lines. Although it has a plastic finish it does have a rubberised grip that adds texture and gives it a good feel.

D3100 Review

This is a stylish and very affordable first dSLR aimed at those wanting to progress from a compact or bridge camera to a user-friendly dSLR. It is well-specified and is ideal for the newbies with its Enhanced Guide and Guide modes in addition to Auto mode. Full manual control means that the more skilled photographer will not be bored either. The speed with which it achieves focus could be improved but when using Live View the opposite is true - focus is achieved very quickly and accurately. Also in its favour is its ability to select focus anywhere across the screen. The movie mode is good and it's easy to use but unfortunately the overall quality could be improved. Image quality of still shots is good but there is a tendency to overexpose and the higher ISO range does show some noise. If you're happy to stick to using a maximum of ISO 6400 you won't be disappointed. Despite these issues it is a great camera and it does perform exceedingly well, particularly for the price!

D3100 Pros and cons

  • Good image quality overall
  • Easy to use
  • Fast and accurate focus in Live View
  • Video quality could be improved
  • Tendency to overexpose
